The burqa
Originally the burqa was designed as a protection from sun and sand. Against so many prejudices Omani bedu women really like to wear it.
"We wear the burqa not because we feel ashamed to appear without it, but because it is nicer to appear with it." This citation of an Omani woman makes abundantly clear that an opinion regarding the burqa becomes almost a traditional prejudice.
The mask has its origins from the inhabitants of the desert who wore it as a protection from sun and sand. They also sew these masks. Mostly the burqas are black, but sometimes they shine golden or purple.
In the "design" there are many differences. Some masks accent the woman’s eyes because the cuttings fit to the eyes, others again barely cover the face, merely framing it.
Georg Popp
What makes this travel guide so special? This book is a product of the long-term personal friendship between the authors, Mr Georg Popp and Mr Juma Al-Maskari and their continuing fascination with the Sultanate of Oman. Combining their insights from European and Omani perspectives, they have produced a guide which is as much about culture and history as it is a practical guide for planning your itinerary.
