The "Oman House" in Misfat Al Abryeen
Since the end of 2010 it is possible for you to overnight in a traditional, lovingly restored mudbrick house, in the mountain oasis Misfat al Abryeen. The rooms are simple but nice, and decorated with historical everyday objects. Spending a night in the Oman House will give you a unique perspective on the former way of life in the village.
The owner, Ahmed Al Abri, has decorated the 11 rooms with utensils and objects which were used in former times. The pleasant, comfortable atmosphere of the ancient house, nestled among the date palms, with the centuries-old water canals (aflaj) flowing by, makes up for the lack of a private bath and toilet in every bedroom, but rest assured: the facilities are more than adequate.
Meals can be taken on the rooftop terrace, where you have a panoramic view of the palms and oasis. The meals are prepared by an Omani family, your next door neighbors!
In the afternoon, the oasis is frequented by tourists, but early mornings you have the oasis practically to yourself. You are free to stroll along the main aflaj which irrigates the hillside terraces dangling precipitously on the slopes, and/or explore the gorge which separates the old village from the "new town."
From Misfat Al Abreen excursions by car may be taken to the Al Hoota Cave; the oasis of Al Hamra and its museum "Bait al Safa;" to Bahla, the pottery oasis; and the palace-fortress of Jabreen. If you have a 4WD you can also explore Jabal Shams and the Wadi Nakhar.

What makes this travel guide so special? This book is a product of the long-term personal friendship between the authors, Mr Georg Popp and Mr Juma Al-Maskari and their continuing fascination with the Sultanate of Oman. Combining their insights from European and Omani perspectives, they have produced a guide which is as much about culture and history as it is a practical guide for planning your itinerary.
